Common Winter Plumbing Problems

As you enjoy the new year with family and friends, the last thing you want to worry about is an issue with your plumbing. Iowa winters can be tough on your plumbing system. While you can’t prevent every issue, there are a few warning signs you can look for to help you catch the problem before it turns into a disaster.

Frozen or Cracked Pipes

There are a lot of factors that can lead to frozen pipes, including uninsulated or exposed pipes coming into your home from outside or those on an exterior wall. The first sign of freezing pipes is restricted water flow. If you notice your sink or shower doesn’t have the same pressure you’re used to, you may have partially frozen pipes. Try leaving some faucets on so there is a small steam of water coming out. Moving water is less likely to freeze and can even clear out small amounts of ice buildup from a waterline. You can also open cabinets under your sinks to allow the warm air from your home to get to the waterlines and to help keep them from freezing.

If you turn on your sink or shower and notice that your water pressure has dropped significantly, you may have a leak on a waterline. If you suspect a leak you should shut off the main water valve for the home and call a professional as soon as possible. Using water when you have a cracked pipe can lead to major damage to your home, costing you a lot of money.

Water Heater Problems

In the winter months, the water coming into your home is colder, which means your water heater has to work harder. If you notice your water isn’t as hot as normal or that you’re running out of hot water more often, you should have a professional come out to inspect your water heater before it fails. A professional will give you the best advice based on the specific type of water heater you have.

If you don’t have hot water or your water heater leaks, your water heater probably needs to be replaced. In the winter this can more problematic, but we offer 24/7 emergency service.
