Flooding Prevention Tips

If you’ve lived in or near Cedar Rapids, you may already know the area can be prone to flooding, especially near the Cedar River. While flood prevention isn’t always possible, there are a few steps you can take to mitigate the damage.

Check Your Sump Pump

Regularly checking your sump pump can prevent your basement from flooding. If you have a sump pump, inspect the sump pit to ensure it is clean and free of debris. Slowly pour a few gallons of water into the well until the sump pump turns on. If the water level does not go down, your sump pump will need professional attention to prevent it from overflowing during a weather event.

Have Backup Electricity

The worst time to find that you don’t have a working sump pump is in the middle of a flood. Your sump pump requires electricity to work; if your power goes out so does your sump pump. Consider using a generator, so your sump pump can keep up with rising water when power is out.

Adjust Your Downspouts

Aiming gutter downspouts away from your home’s foundation will keep water from pooling and seeping into the home.  Many homeowners use long downspouts or troughs to guide water away from their homes.  If you keep water away from your foundation, your sump pump will not have to work so hard to keep water out of your home.

Clean Your Gutters

Plugged gutters can also cause gutter leaks and backups, which can result in an accumulation of water around your home. At least once per year, remove any debris that has built up in your gutter systems. This would be a great addition to your spring cleaning checklist!

Check For Leaks

Leaks in the windows or cracks in foundation are two common causes of basement flooding. Inspect, repair, or replace any damage you find. Minor cracks are a fairly natural occurrence and can often be replaced at home.
