Preparing Your Home for Spring
Written by Hanna Plumbing & Heating / February 26, 2020
Spring is the perfect time to schedule maintenance on your plumbing and HVAC, even if you’re not experiencing an emergency. Below is a short list of services we’ve found to be beneficial to maintaining a healthy and efficient home.
Test and Check for Leaks
Cold Iowa weather can cause pipes to freeze in the winter, meaning these pipes can leak or burst. Test your indoor and outdoor faucets for water pressure. If the water pressure seems low, check your pipes for leaks. Although a leak may seem small at first, it can escalate into a much larger (and more costly) problem over time.
Inspect Your Sump Pump
Your sump pump’s job is to prevent the lowest part of your home from flooding. It’s installed in a sump pit (typically found in the basement), and as water fills the pit, the sump pump removes the excess water to prevent it from overflowing. Even the smallest amount of water in your basement can cause significant damage, so it’s important your sump pump works properly during the rainiest parts of the year. If you have questions about sump pump repairs or installation, a Hanna team member can provide honest and dependable advice.
How to Test Your Sump Pump
- 1. Make sure the pit and the area surrounding it are clear of any debris that could prevent the machine from properly working.
- 2. Test your sump pump by pouring water directly into the pit. You’ll need to pour enough that the float activator arm will move, but you shouldn’t pour so much that the pit overflows.
- 3. If you have a functioning sump pump, you should hear the machine turn on and begin pumping water out of the pit.
- 4. If you have a battery back-up pump, check the battery to make sure you are ready if a heavy storm knocks out your home’s electricity.
- 5. If you’re not sure if your sump pump is working correctly, you will want to call a professional.
Tune-Up Your HVAC System
Prevent your HVAC system from breaking down when you need it most by scheduling an HVAC tune-up. Neglected HVAC systems can often harbor mold and bacteria growth, can cause gas leaks, and can be the culprit of other safety issues. Your technician will clean and complete a safety inspection, ensuring your system is running safely and smoothly before the hot summer months.
By being proactive with your plumbing and HVAC maintenance, you can save money over time and ensure a safer and healthier home environment for your family. Want to schedule an inspection this spring? Learn more about our services or contact us for more information.
