Summer Plumbing Problems — Four Tips to Keep Your Plumbing Humming This Summer

Written by Hanna Plumbing & Heating / July 19, 2024

Four tips to keep your plumbing humming this summer.

Summer was made for water.

From watering plants to diving in pools, we use a lot of H2O this time of year. Increased usage and higher heat can put a strain on your plumbing system. Read on for four of the most common summer plumbing issues and what you can do to spot and prevent damage.

Leaky Faucets & Pipes

High temps and more usage can cause metal components to expand and contract, leading to small leaks at the joints. And while they might start small, they can turn into big messes. This is true for both your indoor and outdoor fixtures.

TIP: Check for wetness around the base of your fixtures and underneath your sinks, as well as listen for dripping water behind your walls.

Water Heater Hazards

Summer heat can be hard on your water heater. Intense temps can lead to cracks, and heavy usage between indoors and outdoors can cause failure of the entire system.

TIP: Mind your hot water usage and take notice of differences, like delayed or shortened heating and odd noises from your water heater.

Sump Pump Sunk

Unexpected and prolonged downpours can overwhelm your sump pump. Severe storms could also cut your power, completely disabling your sump pump. When that happens, a flooded basement becomes a major risk.

TIP: Remove any dirt or debris from around your sump pump and its pit. Consider a generator or battery-powered sump pump in case of severe weather. Have your pump inspected to ensure it has both the power and capability to handle a deluge of rain and ground water.

Garbage Disposal Disaster

Cookouts, barbeques, and summer parties mean you’re likely making (and disposing) of more food than usual. Large items and high volume can clog your disposal system, damage the blades, and wear out the motor.

TIP: Avoid disposing items like bones, corncobs, or cooking grease. Use cold water when running your disposal and leave the water running for a few seconds after turning off your disposal. Hot water can cause grease and other items to stick to the blades more easily.
