Is a Tankless Water Heater Right for Me?
Written by deNovo / August 18, 2017
Tankless water heaters are an energy efficient alternative to traditional tank heaters. They are many times referred to as “on-demand” water heaters because they only heat the water you are using and provide a continuous supply of hot water. In contrast, tank water heaters must fill an entire storage tank full of hot water, which has to be refilled every time it runs out.
“Is a tankless water heater right for me?”
This is a question we get a lot. The truth is, it depends. Tankless water heaters save on energy and last longer, but their initial price is much higher. The pros and cons of tankless water heaters may be able to help you decide if a tankless water heater is right for you. If you’re still not sure, give us a call!
Pros:
– Many come with a federal rebate for energy efficiency. This rebate averages to about $300 for an electrical unit.
– Tankless water heaters last approximately 5-10 years longer than traditional water heaters
– They are more efficient than tank water heaters by 30% – 50% (percentages vary based on type of unit)
– You will save space – tankless water heaters can mount on walls and are a great option for smaller homes with minimal storage space.
– Tankless water heaters only use enough power to heat the water being used at that moment
Cons:
– Tankless water heaters have a more expensive up-front cost.
– Electric models may require that you have electrical work done to add another circuit
– Tankless water heaters split hot water between all utilities, which can result in a lack of hot water in the shower or sink.
– You have to properly vent gas and propane units. This can require you install stainless steel tubing into your home.
