Test and Check for Leaks

If the water pressure seems low, check your pipes for leaks. Although a leak may seem small at first, it can escalate into a much larger (and more costly) problem over time.

Inspect Your Sump Pump

Your sump pump’s job is to prevent the lowest part of your home from flooding. It’s installed in a sump pit (typically found in the basement), and as water fills the pit, the sump pump removes the excess water to prevent it from overflowing. Even the smallest amount of water in your basement can cause significant damage, so it’s important your sump pump works properly during the rainiest parts of the year. How to Test Your Sump Pump

1. 1. Make sure the pit and the area surrounding it are clear of any debris that could prevent the machine from properly working.
2. 2. Test your sump pump by pouring water directly into the pit. You’ll need to pour enough that the float activator arm will move, but you shouldn’t pour so much that the pit overflows.
3. 3. If you have a functioning sump pump, you should hear the machine turn on and begin pumping water out of the pit.
4. 4. If you have a battery back-up pump, check the battery to make sure you are ready if a heavy storm knocks out your home’s electricity.
5. 5. If you’re not sure if your sump pump is working correctly, you will want to call a professional.
