How hard is the water in Eastern Iowa?

Marion's water is very hard (18–20 grains per gallon) and is not softened by the city. Hiawatha runs 14–20 gpg and Coralville 7–10 gpg. Cedar Rapids, Robins, Iowa City and North Liberty soften centrally, so most homes there don't need their own softener. Rural towns like Shueyville, Swisher and Toddville are on private wells — test before you treat.

Reading the numbers

What counts as “hard”?

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, measured in grains per gallon (1 gpg ≈ 17.1 mg/L). The USGS scale breaks it into four bands:

Soft

0 – 3.5 gpg · 0 – 60 mg/L

Easy on fixtures and water heaters. Soap lathers readily; no softener needed.

Moderately hard

3.5 – 7 gpg · 61 – 120 mg/L

Some spotting and light scale. A softener is optional — worth it for high-efficiency equipment.

Hard

7 – 10.5 gpg · 121 – 180 mg/L

Visible scale on fixtures and inside water heaters; shortens equipment life. A softener earns its keep.

Very hard

over 10.5 gpg · over 180 mg/L

Heavy scale on heating elements, tankless heat exchangers and valves. Softening is effectively required to protect equipment.

What the data means for your house

What does hard water actually do to a water heater?

Calcium and magnesium precipitate out when water is heated, coating tank bottoms, heating elements and tankless heat exchangers with scale — which cuts efficiency, then kills the equipment early.

In a tank heater, scale forms an insulating layer that makes the burner work longer for the same hot water and accelerates tank failure. In a tankless unit it clogs the narrow heat-exchanger passages — at Marion or Hiawatha hardness levels, an unprotected tankless can need descaling within a year. Every water heater we install in a very-hard-water town gets an honest conversation about softening first.

Do I actually need a water softener, or are you just selling one?

Depends entirely on your town and your tap. In Marion, Hiawatha and most well homes: genuinely yes. In Cedar Rapids, Robins, Iowa City and North Liberty, the city already softens — usually no.

This is the honest version of the answer, town by town, in the table above. Where the city softens centrally, we'll tell you to save your money — Iowa City even warns that stacking a home softener on already-soft water can corrode metal plumbing. Where the water runs 14–20 grains unsoftened, a properly sized softener pays for itself in equipment life. When the town publishes no number, we test at your tap before quoting anything.

What a softener costs, honestly

Why is my water leaving orange or rust stains?

Iron. Eastern Iowa's aquifers carry a lot of it — Marion built a dedicated iron-removal plant in 2023, and Vinton runs three iron filters at its plant. In well homes, iron filtration is on you.

Municipal plants knock most of it down, but spring hydrant flushing (Marion flushes every April–May) can stir sediment into temporarily rusty water, and private wells in the Silurian-Devonian aquifer often carry enough iron to overwhelm a softener alone. Persistent staining is a test-then-treat problem: sometimes it's the supply, sometimes it's rusting galvanized pipe inside your own walls.

We're on a private well — what should we be doing?

Test annually for bacteria and nitrate (free or low-cost through Iowa's county Private Well Grant Program), and size any treatment equipment from a real tap test — never from a guess.

About 230,000 Iowans rely on private wells, and statewide testing regularly finds 10–30% of wells positive for nitrates or coliform in a given year — private wells are essentially unregulated after construction, so nobody is checking your water but you. Around Shueyville, Swisher and Toddville the standard mechanical-room lineup is a softener plus iron filter, with reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap where nitrate shows up.

This valley remembers 2008.

On June 13, 2008 the Cedar River crested at 31.12 feet in Cedar Rapids — more than 19 feet above flood stage and 11 feet above the previous record from 1929.

The flood covered 10 square miles (14% of the city), swamped 1,126 city blocks, flooded 5,390 homes and displaced more than 18,000 residents. The same June, the Iowa River crested at 31.53 feet in Iowa City and the Coralville Reservoir overtopped its emergency spillway — as it had for 28 straight days in 1993.

Sump season is February–May

Eastern Iowa's sump season peaks from late February through May: snow melts over still-frozen subsoil, the runoff can't soak in, and hydrostatic pressure forces groundwater at foundation walls — right when spring thunderstorms knock out power. Iowa Code chapter 105 requires licensed plumbers and mechanical professionals — regulated by the state Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board — and Cedar Rapids, Marion and Linn County all require permits for water heater and boiler replacement. Owner-occupants of single-family homes can pull their own permit under a homestead exemption, but the work still has to meet code and pass inspection. Heating systems here are sized to an ASHRAE/ACCA Manual J 99% winter design temperature of about −6°F for Cedar Rapids — the heating season runs roughly October through April.

Buried water lines must sit below the frost line (the plumbing code requires at least 6 inches below it, and never less than 12 inches below grade) — one reason spring frost movement and deep-freeze winters find weak points in old service lines.

How hard is the water in Marion, Iowa?

Very hard — 18 to 20 grains per gallon per the Marion Water Department's own consumer confidence report, and the city does not soften it at the plant. Anything over 10.5 grains is 'very hard' on the USGS scale. It's the hardest verified municipal water in our service area.

How hard is the water in Cedar Rapids?

Cedar Rapids lime-softens its water at the treatment plant, and the city itself says the process makes home softeners generally unnecessary. Robins buys the same water. If you're seeing heavy scale in a Cedar Rapids home, test before buying equipment — the cause is often inside the house, not the supply.

What is a grain per gallon (gpg)?

The standard unit for water hardness: one grain of dissolved calcium carbonate per US gallon, equal to about 17.1 mg/L. The USGS scale reads: 0–3.5 gpg soft, 3.5–7 moderately hard, 7–10.5 hard, and over 10.5 very hard. Marion at 18–20 gpg is roughly double the 'very hard' threshold.

Is hard water bad for my health?

No — hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, which are harmless to drink. The damage is financial: scale shortens the life of water heaters, tankless units, boilers, fixtures and appliances, and makes soap and detergent work poorly. Softening is an equipment decision, not a safety one.

Do sump pumps really matter this much in Eastern Iowa?

Yes. The 2008 flood put 10 square miles of Cedar Rapids underwater, and even in normal years the spring thaw pushes groundwater at basements across the Corridor — meltwater can't soak into frozen ground, so it presses against foundations instead. A primary pump lasts 7–10 years; if yours is older, or has no battery backup for storm outages, fix that before March.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater or boiler around Cedar Rapids?

Yes — Cedar Rapids, Marion and Linn County all require plumbing/mechanical permits for water heater and boiler replacement, and Iowa Code chapter 105 requires the work be done by state-licensed professionals (owner-occupants can pull their own permit for their homestead, but the work must still pass inspection).
