Gas Line Installation: Code, Safety & Why Not DIY
Running a new gas line is careful, methodical work with a pressure test at the end. Here's the process, the materials, and the reason licensing exists.
What a gas line job actually involves
A new gas line starts at your existing gas system — the meter or an appropriately sized branch — and runs new pipe to wherever the new appliance lives, with a shutoff valve at the appliance and a drip leg to catch debris. The finished line is pressure-tested before gas ever flows: the system is charged with air and watched on a gauge to prove it holds, and the local inspector signs off. That test is the whole point. A water leak announces itself; a gas leak needs to be proven impossible before the meter turns.
Why sizing is the invisible half of the job
Gas appliances are rated in BTUs, and the pipe feeding them has to deliver enough volume at pressure — not just for the new appliance, but for everything already on the system running at once. A generator or tankless water heater added to a house can exceed what the existing piping was sized to carry, starving appliances in ways that show up as nuisance shutdowns and poor combustion. A proper install begins with a load calculation of the whole house, which is exactly the step a handyman quote skips.
Black iron, CSST, and where each belongs
Traditional black iron pipe is the workhorse: threaded steel, extremely durable, assembled joint by joint. CSST — the yellow-jacketed flexible stainless tubing — routes through joists and tight spaces far faster, but it comes with its own code rules, most importantly proper electrical bonding to protect it from lightning-induced damage. Both are legitimate materials in the right hands. What is not legitimate is the flexible appliance connector pressed into service as a buried or through-wall gas line — a shortcut we occasionally find behind ranges, and always replace.
Permits and licensing aren't red tape here
Gas work is permitted and inspected in Iowa municipalities for the plainest possible reason: the failure mode affects the whole house and the houses beside it. Licensed work means the sizing math was done, the materials are rated, the test was witnessed, and the paper trail exists — which also matters to your insurer and at resale.
