What is in-floor radiant heat?
In-floor radiant runs warm water from a boiler through loops of PEX tubing embedded in or under the floor, turning the entire surface into a low-temperature radiator. Instead of blowing heated air around, the floor warms the objects and people in the room directly, from the feet up. The result is the comfort trick radiant is famous for: rooms feel genuinely warm at lower air temperatures, with no drafts, no register noise, and no cold-floor shock on a January morning.
How the system is put together
The tubing layout is designed room by room and connected to a manifold — the distribution hub where each loop starts and ends, with balancing valves and often flow gauges per loop. A boiler supplies the heat, but radiant floors want much cooler water than old radiators, so a mixing valve or dedicated controls temper the supply. Zone by zone, thermostats call for heat and circulators or zone valves answer. It is the same hydronic logic as any boiler system, tuned for low temperature and long, gentle cycles.
Slab, staple-up, or panels: where the tubing lives
In new construction and garages, tubing is tied to the mesh and cast directly into the concrete slab — the slab itself becomes the radiator, with huge thermal mass. In existing homes, tubing can be stapled up under the subfloor between joists with reflective plates, or laid in low-profile panels over the existing floor during a remodel. Slab systems are the smoothest and slowest; staple-up responds faster but needs careful insulation below so the heat goes up into the room rather than down into the basement.
