The First Five Minutes After a Pipe Bursts

Shut off the water first, everything else second

The single most important move is closing the main shutoff valve, which stops the flooding regardless of where the break is. In most Eastern Iowa homes it is in the basement near where the water line enters, often close to the water meter, and it turns clockwise to close. Go find yours today, while nothing is wrong, and make sure everyone in the house knows it. A burst pipe can push out gallons per minute, so the difference between one minute and ten is the difference between a mess and a disaster.

Kill power to the wet area if it's safe

If water is anywhere near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel, and you can reach the breaker panel without standing in water, shut off circuits serving the affected area. Never wade through standing water to reach a panel; call the utility or fire department instead if that is the situation. Water and energized wiring together turn a plumbing problem into a life-safety problem. This step takes thirty seconds and removes the worst risk in the room.

Drain the lines and relieve the pressure

With the main valve closed, open the lowest faucet in the house, typically a basement sink or a tub, plus one on the top floor. This drains remaining water out of the pipes and stops the dribbling at the break. If the burst pipe is a hot line, also turn the water heater to vacation or off, because a heater firing on an emptying tank can damage itself. These small steps buy calm while help is on the way.

Document, then start moving water

Take photos and video of the damage before cleanup for your insurance claim, including the failed pipe if you can see it. Then get water up fast with towels, a wet vac, and fans, and move furniture and boxes out of the wet zone. Drying that starts within hours prevents most mold problems; drying that starts in days does not. Your insurer may also want the failed section of pipe preserved, so set it aside rather than tossing it.
