Normally water only moves one direction, but a pressure drop in the city main can pull dirty water backward into your drinking lines. A backflow preventer is a one-way gate that stops that. Iowa plumbing code requires them on things like irrigation systems and boiler fill lines, and some need annual testing.

Why backflow protection is a health rule, not a plumbing nicety

A water-main break or a hydrant drawing hard on the street can drop pressure enough to siphon water backward — and whatever is sitting in an irrigation line, a boiler loop, or a submerged hose gets pulled toward your drinking water. That is why code treats cross-connection control as a public-health requirement rather than a suggestion. Testable assemblies on commercial buildings and irrigation systems typically need a certified test every year, with results filed with the water utility. Skipping the test can mean notices, fines, or in stubborn cases a shut-off.

When a backflow device needs attention

The obvious triggers are a test-due notice from your water utility, water dripping steadily from the relief port on an RPZ assembly, or an irrigation system that was installed without any backflow device at all — common on older DIY systems. Boiler fill lines on hot-water heat also need proper backflow protection, something worth confirming during any boiler service. If you own a commercial building in the Corridor, an annual test by a certified tester is part of the cost of the water service, so put it on the calendar rather than waiting for the letter. Residential fire sprinkler systems and any setup where a hose can sit submerged — a pool fill, a utility-sink attachment — deserve the same scrutiny, because they are cross-connections whether or not anyone has labeled them that way.
