Supply lines are the pressurized side of your plumbing, from the main all the way to the flexible connectors under each sink and behind the toilet. Those small braided connectors are a top source of home water damage because they fail without warning. Replacing rubber washing-machine hoses with braided stainless ones is cheap insurance.

Why the smallest pipes in the house cause the biggest claims

Unlike a drain, a supply line is under constant pressure — when one fails, water runs full-bore until someone shuts it off, and if the house is empty that can be hours or days. Insurance industry data consistently puts failed supply connectors and washing machine hoses among the leading causes of residential water damage, ahead of far more dramatic-sounding failures. The parts at fault are usually the cheapest in the system: rubber washer hoses that age and burst, plastic-nut toilet connectors that crack, and old fixture stops that let go. The exposure is enormous precisely because the parts are treated as an afterthought.

A ten-minute inspection that prevents a five-figure claim

Twice a year, look at every flexible connector in the house: under each sink, behind each toilet, at the washing machine, at the dishwasher and ice maker. Bulges, rust spots on the braid, corrosion or mineral crust at the nuts, and any dampness mean replace now. Rubber washing machine hoses should be swapped for braided stainless on sight, and even braided lines deserve replacement after roughly ten years — the rubber inside them ages regardless of how the outside looks. While you are under there, confirm each fixture stop valve actually turns, because a connector failure with a seized stop means running for the main shut-off.
