PEX

PEX is the flexible plastic tubing that has largely replaced copper for repiping and new construction. It costs less, installs faster, resists scale from hard water, and tolerates a mild freeze better than rigid pipe, though it is not freeze-proof. When we repipe an older galvanized-pipe home in the Corridor, PEX is usually the material we recommend.

Why PEX changed the economics of repiping a house

Repiping used to mean soldering rigid copper through a finished house — slow, joint-heavy work with a torch in your walls. PEX pulls through framing like electrical cable, needs a fraction of the fittings, and turns a multi-week copper job into days, which is most of why whole-home repipes cost what they do now instead of what they used to. For Eastern Iowa specifically it has two extra virtues: its smooth walls do not build hard-water scale the way galvanized steel does, and its flexibility gives it a fighting chance of surviving a mild freeze that would split rigid pipe outright.

When PEX is the answer — and its few real limits

PEX is the default recommendation when a galvanized-pipe home needs a repipe, when a remodel opens walls anyway, or when a freeze-damaged section needs replacing. Its limits are worth knowing: it cannot be exposed to sunlight for long (UV degrades it), it cannot connect directly to a water heater without a short buffer of approved pipe, and rodents will occasionally chew it in crawl spaces. None of those change the recommendation for a typical Corridor repipe — they just belong in the plan. If your home still has gray polybutylene from the 80s or early 90s, that is a different, urgent conversation.
