Concrete slabs are exactly where Iowa winters bite hardest — cold floors make a finished basement unusable and a garage miserable from November to March. Radiant tubing turns the slab itself into the radiator, delivering steady warmth with no blower noise, no ductwork stealing headroom, and no hot ceiling while your feet freeze. And because radiant runs at lower water temperatures than baseboard or cast-iron radiators, it lets a condensing boiler operate deep in its high-efficiency range. The catch: it is a design-and-install-once system, so getting the tube layout and insulation right the first time is everything.

When radiant makes sense — and what to check on an existing system

The economical moments to add radiant are when a slab is being poured anyway — a new garage, an addition, a basement renovation — or when floors are open during a major remodel. Retrofitting under an existing finished floor is possible but costs more per square foot. On an existing system, a zone that has gone cold usually traces to a circulator, zone valve, or air in the loop rather than the tubing; buried PEX itself rarely fails. Steady pressure loss on the boiler gauge is the one symptom worth chasing promptly, since it can mean a slab leak.
