Repiping

Repiping means swapping out the original supply piping through the whole house or a section of it. In Eastern Iowa the usual trigger is old galvanized steel pipe, which rusts shut from the inside and leaves you with weak flow and brown water. A repipe is disruptive for a few days but ends the cycle of chasing one leak after another.

Why patching old galvanized pipe is a losing game

Galvanized steel pipe fails from the inside out: decades of corrosion narrow the bore until a pipe that started at three-quarters of an inch is passing water through a pencil-width channel of rust. Each individual repair splices new pipe into a system that is uniformly at end of life, so the next leak is already scheduled — and every splice point between new and old metal can actually accelerate corrosion. There is also a paperwork angle: some insurers ask about galvanized or polybutylene plumbing, and aging supply pipe can surface during a home sale. A repipe converts an open-ended series of emergencies into one planned project.

The signs a house is ready for a repipe

Brown or rusty water when a tap first opens, hot-side flow noticeably weaker than cold, fixtures that starve when a second one opens, and a history of pinhole leaks are the classic galvanized end-stage symptoms. Two or more leaks in a couple of years is the practical tipping point where repair money is better spent on replacement. The smart scheduling move is to pair a repipe with a remodel or basement finish while walls and ceilings are already open — the same job costs meaningfully less when the access is free. A repipe is also the natural moment to add shut-off valves and cleanouts where the house never had them, so the new system is easier to live with than the old one ever was.
