Symptoms of a sizing miss in your current system include a boiler that fires and stops every few minutes in mild weather, rooms that never catch up in a cold snap, and fuel bills out of line with similar homes. A contractor who measures before quoting is showing you how the rest of the job will go. The same discipline applies to water heaters: recovery rate in BTUs determines how fast a tank reheats, which matters as much as tank size for a busy household.
