Pilot light

The small standing flame that ignites the burner on older gas water heaters and boilers.

Older gas appliances keep a small flame burning at all times to light the main burner on demand. If the pilot will not stay lit, the usual suspect is a worn thermocouple, a draft, or a gas supply issue. Newer equipment uses electronic ignition instead, which saves gas and removes the relight ritual.

Why a dead pilot light is information, not just an annoyance

A standing pilot is a simple system with a built-in safety: the flame heats a thermocouple, the thermocouple holds the gas valve open, and if the flame dies the gas shuts off. So a pilot that keeps going out is usually one of three stories — a thermocouple at the end of its life, a draft or venting problem blowing the flame out, or a gas supply issue. The first is a cheap fix; the second two deserve real attention, because the same venting problem that kills a pilot can also be putting combustion gases where they do not belong.

Relight once — then pay attention to the pattern

Relighting a pilot per the instructions on the appliance label is reasonable homeowner territory. The pattern afterward is what matters: a pilot that lights but dies as soon as you release the button is the textbook worn thermocouple; one that runs for days and dies on windy weather points at drafting; one that will not light at all may be a gas supply or valve problem. Repeated outages on a water heater or boiler are a service call, not a nightly ritual. And if you ever smell gas, do not relight anything — leave the house and make the call from outside.
