Thermocouple

The thermocouple sits in the pilot flame and generates a tiny electrical signal that holds the gas valve open. When the flame goes out, the signal stops and the gas shuts off, which is what keeps a blown-out pilot from filling your basement with gas. A pilot that lights but will not stay lit is the classic sign of a worn thermocouple, and it is an inexpensive fix.

Why this tiny part is the difference between a nuisance and a hazard

The thermocouple is a fail-safe in the truest sense: it works by constantly proving the flame exists, and the moment it cannot, the gas stops. That design is why a standing-pilot appliance can sit unattended in a basement for decades without raw gas ever escaping. It also means a failing thermocouple errs in the safe direction — the appliance quits heating rather than leaking — which is inconvenient but exactly right. The part itself costs little; what it protects against is a basement filling with gas. That asymmetry is why it should only ever be replaced, never defeated.

The telltale pattern of a worn thermocouple

The classic sequence: the pilot lights normally while you hold the control button, then dies the instant you release it — the aging sensor can no longer generate enough signal to hold the gas valve open on its own. A pilot that needs the button held longer and longer before it will stay is the same part in slower decline. Cold showers or a cold house from a dead pilot in an Iowa winter feel like a big failure, but this is one of the cheapest repairs in the trade. What it is not is a part to bypass: any rigged workaround that holds the valve open removes the only thing watching the flame.
