Why a sump pump is the hardest-working appliance in an Iowa basement

Around Marion and Cedar Rapids, spring rain and a seasonally high water table mean groundwater pressing against basement floors is normal, not exceptional — the sump system is the designed relief point, and everything in a finished basement depends on it. The cruel physics: the pump is most likely to fail exactly when it is needed most, because the same storm that raises the groundwater can knock out the power that runs it. Test it every spring — and know the sounds of a pump in decline

Pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float lifts: the pump should start promptly, evacuate the pit quickly, and shut off without running on. Grinding or rattling, short-cycling every few minutes, a float that hangs on the pit wall, or a pump running constantly in dry weather are all warnings. Age is a factor on its own — most pumps give seven to ten years of service, and a pump past that in a finished basement is a gamble. Check the discharge line outside too: a frozen or buried outlet in an Iowa winter can stop a perfectly good pump.
