How long does a Zoeller sump pump last?
Primary pumps typically give 7–10 years of service. What kills them early isn't usually the motor — it's a scaled-up float switch, a plugged weep hole, or running dry against a stuck check valve. An annual test (pour a bucket, watch it cycle) catches all three.
Do I really need a battery backup pump?
If your basement is finished, or your home is in the parts of the Corridor that push groundwater every spring — yes. The 2008 flood and every major storm since made the same point: the night your sump matters most is often the night the power fails. We install battery backups alongside the Zoeller primary.
Why cast iron instead of a cheaper plastic pump?
Heat. A pump working a wet Iowa spring runs long cycles, and cast iron sheds motor heat into the water far better than plastic housings — that's the difference in service life. Zoeller's cast-iron M53 is the industry's benchmark primary pump for a reason.
