Ruud in Eastern Iowa

The tank water heaters we install most — a brand older than indoor plumbing codes.

Ruud is our go-to tank water heater line: dependable storage heaters from the company whose founder invented the automatic storage water heater in the 1890s. We install Ruud Professional-series tanks sized for Eastern Iowa households, pull the permit, and set them up to survive our very hard water.

The company

Who makes it

Edwin Ruud, a Norwegian-born engineer, is credited with inventing the first automatic storage water heater; the company he founded in 1897 has been part of Rheem Manufacturing since 1959, so Ruud and Rheem heaters share the same engineering and factories.

What we install from Ruud

Professional series tanks

Contractor-grade gas and electric storage heaters (the Professional Achiever and Professional lines) sold through licensed installers rather than big-box shelves — with heavier-duty components like brass drain valves and premium anode rods.

Scale-fighting design

Gas models use Ruud's EverKleen self-cleaning system — a spiraling inlet stream that keeps sediment stirred up instead of letting it blanket the burner plate — plus a porcelain-lined tank and sacrificial anode rod for corrosion protection.

Guardian safety system

Ruud gas tanks include flammable-vapor ignition resistance (the Guardian System), which shuts the burner down if flammable vapors are detected — one reason correct venting and placement matter at install time.

Why the local water changes the answer

Marion's 18–20 grain water is roughly double the 'very hard' threshold, and every gallon of it gets heated in your tank. Heating precipitates that calcium out as scale on the tank bottom and elements, and the high mineral load eats anode rods faster than in soft-water towns. Around here a Ruud tank earns its full lifespan with periodic flushing, an anode check every few years — and ideally soft water in front of it.

Your town's number matters

Marion runs 18–20 grains per gallon; Cedar Rapids softens at the plant; the well towns are test-first. We compiled the verified hardness for all 15 towns we serve.

Warranty & workmanship

What the warranty actually says

Manufacturer coverage

Residential Ruud tank warranties run roughly 6 to 12 years depending on the series — for example, the Professional Electric line carries an 8-year tank and parts warranty that extends to 12 years with the ProtectionPlus kit, while Professional Achiever models start at 6 years. Always confirm the current terms for your exact model.

Why a pro install protects it

Ruud's warranty assumes the heater is installed to code and the manufacturer's instructions — venting, gas sizing, T&P discharge, expansion control. Cedar Rapids, Marion and Linn County all require a permit for water heater replacement, and Iowa Code chapter 105 requires licensed installers. When Hanna does the job, the permit and inspection are included.

Good questions

Answers before you call.

Still wondering about something specific? We’re happy to talk it through — no obligation.

Is Ruud the same as Rheem?

Effectively yes — Rheem purchased Ruud in 1959, and the two brands share engineering and manufacturing. Ruud is the contractor-focused label, which is why you'll see it from licensed installers like us rather than on big-box shelves.

How long should a Ruud tank last in Marion's hard water?

Tank heaters around here typically give 8–12 years. Unsoftened 18–20 grain water shortens that through scale and faster anode-rod consumption — flushing the tank, checking the anode, and softening the supply are what stretch a Ruud toward the long end of the range.

Do you install Ruud tanks the same day?

Usually, yes — failed water heaters are one of our most common same-day calls. We stock common residential sizes, and estimates are free on work over $500.
