Residential softeners (WHES30/33/40/44 class) with capacity tiers matched to household size — the WHES40 class is rated to remove hardness up to 125 grains per gallon and clear-water iron, several times what even Marion's supply carries.
The controller learns your household's usage and regenerates only when the resin actually needs it — less salt and less wastewater than old clock-timer softeners.

This is the brand that protects all the others. At Marion's 18–20 grains — or on a Shueyville or Swisher well running hard and iron-heavy — a properly sized softener is the difference between water heaters, tankless units, fixtures and appliances reaching their design life or dying young. Sizing matters: grains of hardness × gallons used per day decides the capacity class, which is why we test at your tap before quoting.

The factory warranty on WHES softeners runs 1 year full parts and labor, 3 years on the electronic control, and 10 years on the salt-storage and resin tanks against rust and leaks — extendable (per the warranty document) by using Whirlpool's own WHE-WSC softener cleanser on schedule and registering the unit. Improper installation is an explicit exclusion.

A softener install touches your main water line, a drain and (done right) a bypass — and the warranty excludes failures from improper installation. Sizing from a real tap test is the part a box store can't do: undersized units regenerate constantly and die early; oversized ones waste salt. We test first, size honestly, and install to code.

Usually not — both cities lime-soften at the plant, and Iowa City even cautions that stacking a home softener on already-soft water can be corrosive. That's the honest answer, and it's the same one on our water-quality data page. Marion, Hiawatha and the well towns are a different story.
Different jobs. A softener treats the whole house for hardness (protecting equipment and fixtures); an RO system polishes drinking water at one tap (taste, nitrate, lead). Well homes often want both — softener plus iron filter for the house, RO at the kitchen sink.
