A healthy deep-cycle battery typically runs a backup pump intermittently through several hours to a day or more of outage, depending on how hard the water is coming in — the pump only runs when the float calls for it. That window covers the large majority of storm outages. What it will not do is run for a week, and a battery that has quietly aged out delivers far less than its label. Batteries are consumables: they need a test button pressed a few times a year and replacement every few years.
Water-powered backups and other options
Homes on municipal water have another option: a water-powered backup pump that uses city water pressure through an ejector to pull pit water out — no battery at all, running as long as the city has pressure. The trade-off is that it consumes several gallons of city water per gallon pumped, and it needs a proper backflow-protected connection installed to code. For some homes it is the right belt-and-suspenders choice alongside a battery unit; for others the battery system alone fits better.
