Anode rod

The anode rod hangs inside your water heater tank and attracts the corrosion that would otherwise eat through the steel liner. Once the rod is used up, the tank starts rusting from the inside, which is why heaters fail early. With Marion and Cedar Rapids water being as hard as it is, checking the rod every few years is a cheap way to get more life out of a Ruud tank unit.

Why this one rod decides when you buy your next water heater

A glass-lined steel tank cannot be repaired once it rusts through — a leaking tank means a replacement, full stop. The anode rod is the only part in the heater whose whole job is to postpone that day, and it is a fraction of the cost of a new unit. Manufacturers size their warranties around it: longer-warranty tanks usually just ship with a bigger or second anode. Eastern Iowa's mineral-heavy water speeds up the reaction that consumes the rod, so a rod that lasts six years in soft-water country can be gone here in three or four.

Signs the anode rod is already spent

A rotten-egg smell from the hot taps only, rusty or discolored hot water, and popping or rumbling from the tank are the classic hints that the rod has stopped protecting the steel. None of those mean the tank has failed yet, but they mean the clock is running. A good schedule is a first inspection around year three, then every couple of years after. If an inspection shows mostly bare core wire, the rod is done — and if the tank is already fifteen years old, an honest tech will tell you whether a new rod is even worth it.
