Grains of hardness

The unit used to measure how much dissolved calcium and magnesium is in your water.

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon; anything over 7 is considered hard, and water around Marion and Cedar Rapids commonly tests well into the hard-to-very-hard range. Those minerals scale up water heaters, clog fixtures, and shorten appliance life. A water softener is sized based on your grain count and how much water your household uses.

Why your grain count is the most important water number you don't know

Hardness is the quiet tax on every water-using appliance in an Eastern Iowa home. Scale coats water heater elements and heat exchangers so they burn more energy to do the same job, plugs showerheads and aerators, etches glassware, and leaves the soap scum and dry-skin feel people blame on everything else. The grain number puts a figure on all of it — and it is the number that determines whether a softener makes sense for you and exactly what size, because softeners are sized by grains removed between regenerations, not by house square footage.

Signs your water is telling you the grain count is high

White crust on faucets and showerheads, spots on dishes straight out of the dishwasher, a water heater that rumbles and pops as it fires, and skin or laundry that never feels quite rinsed are all hardness at work. The next step is not guessing — it is a test. A proper water test gives you grains per gallon plus iron and other factors that affect treatment choices. From there the softener conversation is arithmetic, not sales talk: your grain count times your household's daily gallons tells you what capacity actually fits.
