Why the pipe you cannot see is the one that owns you

Most homeowners assume the city owns the sewer at the property line; in most Corridor jurisdictions the lateral is yours all the way to the main, street pavement included. That makes it the single most expensive pipe on the property — and the least visible. Older neighborhoods run heavily to vitrified clay tile laid in short sections, and every joint is an invitation to tree roots, especially in Iowa's wet springs when roots hunt aggressively for water. A lateral's condition is knowable for the cost of a camera inspection; its failure, discovered by a basement full of sewage, is knowable the expensive way.

The warning signs a lateral gives before it fails

Gurgling from floor drains or toilets when other fixtures run, multiple slow drains at once, sewage odor in the basement, and a lush green stripe or soggy patch across the yard in dry weather are all lateral symptoms. Backups that recur seasonally — wet springs especially — usually mean root intrusion on a cycle. Any of these earns a camera inspection before money goes into repeated cabling. And if you are buying a home built before roughly 1980, a pre-purchase sewer scope is among the highest-value inspections you can order, given what lateral repair costs.
