Trenchless sewer repair

Repairing or replacing a buried sewer line without digging up the whole yard.

Trenchless methods either burst the old pipe while pulling a new one through, or line the existing pipe with a cured-in-place sleeve. Either way, you get a new sewer with only small access pits instead of a trench across the lawn and driveway. It is not right for every failure, so a camera inspection comes first.

Why the digging, not the pipe, is the real cost of sewer work

In a traditional sewer replacement, the pipe itself is a minor line item — the money goes into excavating a trench across whatever sits above the line: mature trees, driveways, patios, sidewalks, sometimes the street, plus restoring all of it afterward. Trenchless methods attack exactly that cost. Pipe bursting pulls a new line through the old one's path from two small pits; cured-in-place lining builds a new jointless pipe inside the old one, which incidentally seals the root-inviting joints that plague the clay laterals under older Marion and Cedar Rapids yards. When a yard's surface is worth more than the pipe under it, trenchless usually wins the total math.

Which failures qualify — and which still need a shovel

Good trenchless candidates are lines with root-invaded joints, cracks, or moderate deterioration where the pipe still holds its shape and grade. The disqualifiers matter just as much: a fully collapsed section leaves nothing to pull through or line, a badly bellied line will keep its sag no matter what is inserted, and severe misalignment can rule out lining. The camera inspection is therefore not a formality — it is the decision. Get the footage, have the failure shown to you on screen, and be wary of any contractor who quotes a method before anyone has looked inside the pipe.
